Man who survived shotgun hit by balaclava-clad men on Scots street dies five years on

A man who survived a street shooting has died suddenly five years on.

Jimmy McSorley was blasted by a shotgun as he walked with a friend in a lane in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.

Pellets lodged in his brain near major blood vessels and, although he made a good recovery, doctors warned he would have problems for the rest of his life.

His pal Craig Burns, then 26, lost an eye in the June 2016 attack, which was said to have been carried out by two men wearing balaclavas.

Gunman James Allan, 31, and getaway driver William Edwards, 47, were each jailed for 12 years for attempted murder.

The High Court in Glasgow heard Allan had a grudge against McSorley, but Burns was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time.

McSorley, 32, died last month, only weeks after being freed from custody on bail. He was awaiting trial on assault and robbery charges.

Friends released balloons in his honour and his funeral was held at St Peter's RC Church in Hamilton on Tuesday.

Writing on Facebook about her brother's death, Toni Louise McKechnie said: "I just hope you know how much you are loved and will always be loved."
