A man began using mamba in jail and was caught with the drug for the second time this year.
A £150 fine was imposed on David Tuckwood, 39, of Homewell Walk, Clifton who faced city magistrates.
The court heard that a plain clothes officer saw a group of men in Peachey Street on March 5.
Matt Evans, prosecuting, said: "As he approached the defendant, he saw him place something in his waistband. It was suspected it was a controlled drug.
"The officer identified himself and said he was going to search him under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

"He said 'I put a bag of spice down there.' He admitted the drug was for his own use."
Helen Rooks, mitigating, told the court: "He has a history of cannabis use but when he received a custodial sentence and was in prison, he was introduced to some mamba.
"Since being released, he has from time to time continued to use mamba."
Tuckwood pleaded guilty to having a controlled drug. He was ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a government surcharge of £30.
In January, he admitted a similar offence.
