Man who smoked cannabis at 12 went on to deal the drug

A man started smoking cannabis at the age of 12 and ended up dealing in the drug.

It left Jarod Todd, 29, being handed a one-year prison term, suspended for 18 months, ordered to do 200 hours community work and obey a two-month curfew.

Sitting at Nottingham Crown Court, Judge Steven Coupland told him: "This is your one last chance. Don't blow it.

"Anyone who deals in drugs in the streets of Nottingham, commits a serious offence. This court is tired of dealing with people involved in drugs or who commit offences to pay for drugs."

But he said that Todd supplied people he knew were already cannabis users "rather than the world in general."

Almas Ben-Aribia, prosecuting, said that Todd was in a car pulled over by police officers on January 25 last year.

"The defendant smelt strongly of cannabis," she told the court. Officers found cannabis worth £2,880 while £605 cash was found in the wallet of Todd, Cherry Grove, Mansfield. He admitted having drugs with intent to supply.

Raglan Ashton, mitigating, told the court that Todd had always worked but he was made redundant at the same time as his partner.

"He has had a longstanding cannabis addiction, rather chillingly since the age of 12. He was in a household which perhaps didn't have the structure, support or discipline of many households.

"He was exposed to people smoking cannabis. The underlying reason for his criminality is his drug habit," added Mr Ashton.
