Man who set himself on fire outside White House dies

The man who set himself on fire close to the White House on Wednesday afternoon has died.

Arnav Gupta, 33, whose identity was confirmed today, died after suffering from 85 percent burns to his body.

He was filmed yesterday setting himself on fire in Washington DC, before walking calmly through a park just by the White House.

He was extinguished by Secret Service personnel, according to witnesses, and attended to by police and emergency services at the scene.

This morning it was confirmed that he had died as a result of his injuries.

Arnav Gupta, who lived in Betesda Maryland, had been reported missing by his family on Wednesday.

Montgomery County Police Department posted seeking information on his whereabouts over fears for his safety.

The post said: "Police are concerned for Gupta's physical and emotional welfare."

His family last saw him at 9.20am on Wednesday morning, just three hours before he killed himself.

Before setting himself alight Gupta was seen in the park with a suspicious device.

Multiple videos have emerged online showing him engulfed in flames, with one showing him calmly walking while completely ablaze.

Police have yet to comment on Gupta's motivation.

Donald Trump was in the Oval Office meeting with finance chiefs at the time of the incident.

No one from Trump's office has commented on the death.
