Man who set himself on fire near White House dies from his injuries

A 33-year-old man who set himself on fire near the White House on Wednesday has died from his injuries.

The man, identified as Arnav Gupta, passed away hours after harming himself, the United States Park Police said Thursday.

The disturbing incident took place at about 12:20 p.m. on the Ellipse park near 15th St. NW and Constitution Avenue in Washington. Gupta was extinguished and rushed to a nearby hospital.

Gupta, a resident of Bethesda, Md., had been reported missing earlier in the day Wednesday. He had been last seen leaving his home at around 9:20 a.m.

"Police are concerned for Gupta's physical and emotional welfare," Montgomery County cops wrote on Facebook.

A possible motive is not known.
