Man who replaced missing bike from Banksy mural 'wanted to make people happier'

A man has explained why he decided to replace a bike which went missing from a piece of street art by Banksy.

The mural, depicting a girl hula hooping with a missing tyre of a nearby bicycle, was painted on a wall in Rothesay Avenue, Lenton, in October.

But the bicycle went missing from the scene on Sunday, November 22.

Kyle Myatt, from Radford, says he has now replaced the bike because he wanted to make the artwork complete again.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: "I had seen the bike was missing and I was gutted.

"Banksy has done so much for Nottingham, he's put us on the map and given everyone such a boost.

"I just wanted to do it to make it look better. So I bought the bike, took off the back wheel to match the missing bike and replaced it.

"I just wanted to make people happier. So many people come to take a picture with it, I hope people can take pictures with this new bike as a replacement."

Mr Myatt says he has chained it down to try and make sure others don't steal it again..

Rothesay Avenue is now a popular area with lots of Banksy fans arriving to get their picture taken next to the artwork.

Banksy confirmed it belonged to him in an Instagram post after some questioned whether it was his original work. There was a lot of disappointment from people when they realised the bicycle had gone missing.

Louise Harrison, who was visiting from Wollaton where she has lived for 32 years, said: "I just think it's sad someone would do that.

"I feel like Banksy has given us a gift when we were at a low with increasing infection rates.

"The missing bike does take away from it."

Meanwhile, Oliver Routledge, who was visiting from Clipstone with his dad, said it was there mid-week when they drove past.

They said: "People will know it is the girl with the bike but it does take away from it. It is not complete. It's a shame."
