Man who ran over woman with heavy machinery found not guilty of hit-and-run

A Queensland Rail (QR) employee has been found not guilty of a hit-and-run by a Brisbane District Court jury.

Andre-Shane Moorby ran over 27-year-old Iuliana Stevenson with heavy machinery while she was crossing the road on a green pedestrian light at Bowen Hills in 2017.

But Mr Moory denied he was driving dangerously and told police he had not known he hit Ms Stevenson, who suffered serious injuries because she was in a "blind spot".

It took jurors less than two hours to reach their verdict.

Outside court, Mr Moorby's lawyer Andrew Wiseman said his client was happy with the verdict.

"My client has maintained from the start that he has been regretful of the incident and the injuries," Mr Wiseman said.

"He's glad Ms Stevenson is making a full recovery and he wishes her well with the rest of her life."

Mr Wiseman said dangerous driving was not an appropriate charge.

"We maintained it wasn't a case of dangerous driving but driving a dangerous vehicle, from the start," he said.

"QR has since scrapped the vehicle — it doesn't exist anymore for good reason."

Mr Moorby, who did not want to talk to media, was described as being "highly stressed" from the incident.

"It's been a traumatic 18 months for him, as it has been for everyone else involved," Mr Wiseman said.

"He's just relieved that she's OK — she's on the mend."

Ms Stevenson did not want to comment on the case as she left the District Court.
