Aug. 07--An Elgin man who punched a woman in the face and then shot a man who came to her aid has been sentenced to prison, Kane County prosecutors said Friday.
Nikolis D. Thurnau, 26, of the 2200 block of Dorchester Court, was sentenced late Wednesday to 7 1/2 years in prison, according to prosecutors.
Thurnau had been found guilty following a June trial of aggravated discharge of a firearm for an incident that took place in July 2013 at a Raymond Street apartment building on the east side of Elgin.
A woman who was acquainted with Thurnau went to the building to visit a friend. As the woman left, she encountered Thurnau, and after an exchange of words, he punched her, prosecutors said.
A male acquaintance of the woman's interceded. Thurnau told a friend of his to retrieve a handgun, which Thurnau used to shoot the victim in the right foot, prosecutors said.
Thurnau has a lengthy criminal history, prosecutors said, and served a prison term for aggravated battery.
Judge Susan Clancy Boles handed down the sentence on Wednesday. Thurnau must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence, and he was given credit for the two years he has spent in custody awaiting trial.
