Man who punched pregnant partner's friend five times left with two black eyes

A man who launched a savage attack punching his pregnant partner's friend five times was left with two black eyes after onlookers intervened.

Andrew Ryall was in the car with his pregnant partner when a drunken argument unfolded.

The yob from Fatfield, Washington, lost his cool and attacked his partner's pal before jumping on a car bonnet.

However, South Tyneside Magistrates' Court heard a pair of have-a-go heroes stepped in - and left the Ryall with two black eyes.

Holly Common, prosecuting, said the attack left the woman in pain.

She added: "He the punched (the victim) five times to the face and pulled her hair.

"The victim was shocked at what happened and didn't expect it."

Mitigating, Tracey Wood claimed it was nothing more than "arm flailing" and that it was "punishment enough" that Ryall had been forced to have to attend court twice for the case.

Crime sentence guidelines

Ryall, who pleaded guilty on the day of trial to assault by beating, has been ordered to carry out 120-hours of unpaid work.

And Monday's sentencing heard Ryall got a swift comeuppance when two strangers stepped in.

Ms Wood said: "He walked away with black eyes and quite severe injuries because the Good Samaritan that they were became involved."

She said the defendant, of Farrier Close, had been stressed at the time of the May 3 attack but had since stopped drinking.

Ms Wood added: "He's in a much better pace than he was that evening.

"(The assault) sounds horrific but it is more like arms flailing.

"It is a drunken night out and someone got involved but it is a couple having a verbal argument."

The defendant must may £620 costs and £200 compensation to his victim. He must also pay a £85 surcharge.
