Man 'saw dead body through letterbox' after stench and flies filled apartment block

A man who reportedly looked through a letterbox saw a dead body after an "unimaginable' stench and flies filled an apartment block.

Vulnerable residents in a block for people with mental health issues in Blaby, Leicester, say they have been left living with the bad smell as they wait for the police to clean up the scene following a death.

It comes after a tenant in Auburn House died in his flat, and was not discovered until the body was badly decomposed.

The police removed the body on Tuesday but are yet to clean up the premises.

Linda Wharton's 35-year-old son Craig, who has severe autism, is among the residents, reports Leicester Live.

Linda, who lives in Enderby, said: "It's absolutely shocking that this mess has been left there for so many days.

"There's an unimaginable smell and flies. Craig was the one who looked through the man's letterbox and saw his body.

"It was badly decomposed - they think it had been in there at least two weeks - and now there are still bodily fluids, maggots, flies and a terrible smell.

"It's abysmal for the people living in there. The landlords, EMH, just tell everyone the police are going to clear it up and nothing is being done.

"It's a building with six flats and they are tenants who are vulnerable people.

"The smell is horrendous - you can't explain how awful it is.

"Craig told me that things are seeping through the floor and the tenant downstairs had their light blow and they found maggots getting into that flat."

LeicestershireLive contacted Leicestershire Police who confirmed they were intending to clean up the mess.

A spokesman said: "Around 1pm on Tuesday, August 10, officers received a report from a member of the public concerned for the welfare of a man at a property on Auburn Road, Leicester.

"Officers and East Midlands Ambulance Service attended and sadly a 48-year-old man had died at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of his death but it is not believed to be suspicious.

"Officers have arranged for the property to be deep cleaned."

Chris Ashton, executive director of housing at EMH, said: “We were very saddened to hear this news.

"The matter is currently with the police, and we have offered them our support and co-operation.

"The police will arrange for the property to be cleaned before it is handed back to us.

"We are offering support to other residents on the scheme and will continue to do so.

"Our condolences to family and friends.”
