Man who lost six family members in Grenfell says tower must stand until justice is done

A man who lost six of his family in the Grenfell Tower disaster wants the Government to keep the building standing as a reminder.

Former housing Secretary Robert Jenrick is understood to have been warned the tower is a safety risk for Kensington Aldridge Academy, a secondary school for more than 1,200 children near the burnt remains.

Though the government insists no decision has been made yet, those affected by the tragedy which killed 72 people on June 14, 2017, are now urging for the tower to stay – at least until “justice is done”.

Nabil Choucair, lost mum Sirria, 60, sister Nadia, 30, her husband Bassem Choukair, 40, and nieces Mierna, 13, Fatima, 11, and Zainab, three.

He said: “This tower represents where our families died. With it coming down, it’s them [the Government] trying to get away with it, as if nothing has happened.

“When you see Grenfell Tower you see everybody, it’s our family that you see. It is a reminder to everybody that there’s still justice that has not taken its toll which needs to be done.”

Abbas Dadou, of Lancaster West Residents Association, said deconstructing the block would “disrespect residents and bereaved people.”

The Housing ministry, which has taken ownership of the tower, say there will be no change to the tower before the fifth anniversary in 2022.

Meanwhile, an inquiry into the disaster yesterday heard people in social housing blocks are still at “significant risk” of fires.

Danny Friedman QC, who represents survivors of the west London tower block, told the hearing that Britain currently has an “unstable fire regulatory system”.
