Man who killed neighbour needs more mental health assessment before decision about sentencing

Further mental health assessment is needed on a man has admitted killing a neighbour in Easton.

Bashir Abdullah, 32, died after being stabbed at a property in Lansdowne Court in January last year.

Following an investigation by Avon and Somerset Constabulary's Major Crime Investigation Team, Jamal Sheik-Mohammed, of Lansdowne Court, was charged with his murder.

The case of Sheik-Mohammed, 52, was heard at Bristol Crown Court on June 25 last year and, though he denied murder, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

The case was mentioned today (May 7, 2020).

In a brief hearing, The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair, said Sheik-Mohammed was continuing to receive mental health assessment at Fromeside medium secure hospital in Bristol.

The judge said medical experts indicated they need further investigation before making a recommendation concerning the defendant to the court.

The judge renewed an interim hospital order, under Section 38 of the Mental Health Act, until June 4.

Previously Andrew Langdon QC, defending, told the judge: "I have been provided with reports from doctors, psychiatrists, who have said Mr Sheik-Mohammed's responsibility for the killing is diminished because of his mental state.

"That mental state is still somewhat unclear as to whether it is treatable, or how responsible he was for his actions on the day that he killed his victim."
