Man who killed Adelaide carer in high-speed crash jailed

Police have charged five teenagers over the fatal hit-and-run.

A teenager who killed an Adelaide carer in a high-speed hit-and-run crash in Adelaide's north has been jailed for nine-and-a-half years, with a non-parole period of seven years and seven months.

Mother-of-two Lucy Paveley, 40, died at an intersection near Parafield Airport, while on her way to work at an Anglicare aged care home.

Lyle Leonard Morrison, 19, was behind the wheel of a stolen four-wheel-drive which was travelling at high speed on Main North Road in August last year.

The District Court had earlier heard that he was driving at more than 120 kilometres per hour when the crash happened.

He had pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving but denied a manslaughter charge, which was later dropped.

Sentencing judge Leisl Chapman said that Morrison's car was "like a giant, speeding, deadly bullet" and he acted with complete disregard for the safety of others.

"You ran that red light in total disregard for other road users," she said.

"There is no evidence of any braking on your part, no reduction of speed, not any form of evasive action."

"I've seen the CCTV footage. It is horrendous."

The court heard that after causing the deadly crash, Morrison got into another car driven by a younger teenager and sped away.

They then disposed of the clothes they were wearing at the time of the crash and went and played football.

"You both drove away from the scene and what you had done afterwards leaving devastation behind you," Judge Chapman said.

"The community feels outrage at this type of conduct and rightly so."

"Cars can be deadly weapons and we all rely people behaving responsibly to ensure people can get around safely on the roads."

The 15-year-old boy surrendered to police the next day while Morrison was arrested on a bus heading to the suburb of Marion, south-west of Adelaide.

The younger boy was jailed for at least five years for his role in the crash.
