Man who jumped security fences to enter lions enclosure at zoo attacked and killed

A man has died after jumping into the lion enclosure at a zoo in Ghana and being attacked.

The Forestry Commission in Accra, in south Ghana, has confirmed the man died after being attacked by a lion.

He died from injuries sustained in the incident and his body had been moved to the morgue.

The motive of the intruder had not yet been determined.

The man’s lifeless body was discovered by guards at the zoo, around midday.

John Allotey, Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, said officials of the Accra Zoo on a routine patrol on Sunday noticed a middle aged man had jumped the security fences and entered the lions enclosure of the Zoo.

The horrific incident happened at Accra Zoo in Ghana (Accra Zoo)

He had been attacked and injured by one of the lions within the inner fencing of the enclosure, Mr Allotey said.

Accra Zoo authorities successfully coaxed the lions into a secure hold, before inviting the Achimota Police to convey the body and commence investigations.

"We wish to confirm that the lion, the lioness and the two cubs remain secured in their enclosure at the Accra Zoo,” the authorities said.

A police spokesman also said the Forestry Commission wished to assure the general public that no lion had escaped from the Accra Zoo.

Mr Allotey, along with Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Benitor Owusu Bio, visited the Zoo on Sunday afternoon to ensure all facilities remained secure.

Earlier this year The Mirror reported on a British safari park owner who was savaged and dragged away by a lion into its enclosure.

The distressing footage of British man Mike Hodge being attacked by the lion has remerged online after the incident at Makarele Predator Centre in South Africa in 2018.

Horrified onlookers were left screaming in terror as Mr Hodge was savagely thrown around and dragged around like a rag doll by the ferocious lion.

Mike had entered the cage while another park keeper had come forward with a small bucket in his hand and looked to be coaxing the lion towards the edge.

However, the lion then spots the man in its territory and launches towards him leaving him terrified about what's to happen next.

In the footage, Mr Hodge is seeing running towards a door of the enclosure. But the huge male lion pounces and knocks him to the ground.

Amazingly, Mike survived the traumatic attack after being airlifted by air ambulance for life saving surgery.
