Man who holds gigs in gardens to cheer people up in crisis gets noise warning

Killjoy council bosses gave a singer a noise warning - after he did tribute acts in gardens to try to cheer up neighbours during lockdown.

Michael Boughton, 34, held his first gig with best mate Michael Evans after Mr Evans' dad died of coronavirus. They were unable to hold a large funeral and wake, so the duo honoured his life in Mr Broughton's garden.

Since then, Mr Boughton has been cheering neighbours up with his music but an anonymous resident complained to the local authority.

And, as Lancashire Live says, the dad-to-four received a letter in the post warning him of his behaviour.

"I’m just really disappointed that the person who complained didn’t approach me first or even post a letter through my door and instead went straight to the council," Mr Boughton, from Blackpool, Lancashire, said.

"I understand people have their reasons and when I read the council’s letter I was really disappointed.

"It’s not worth refuting the complaint, I don’t want to get fined.

Explained: What is the 'R number' and how does it affect us?

I have finished it at a reasonable time because I have small children myself.

“It was not my intention to upset people. I wanted to bring people some cheer and I never wanted to be a nuisance."

Mr Boughton, whose wife works for the NHS, said he will now not be continuing the events.

Many people have posted online in support of the dad, although some have noted that elderly or unwell neighbours may not have enjoyed the music.

In the letter sent to Mr Boughton, the Labour-controlled Blackpool Council said: "Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, action can be taken through the Magistrates' Court against any persons who cause noise, as loud or unreasonable as to constitute Noise Nuisance.

"I must therefore ask you to consider carefully the level of noise being emitted from your premises."
