Man who helped others overcome addictions found dead in bath from heroin overdose

A man who worked supporting people in recovery at a Bristol addiction treatment centre died of a heroin overdose at his flat.

Dad-of-one David Odell, 44, was found dead in a bath full of water on September 29, 2018.

Drug paraphernalia was found at his flat in Muller Road, Horfield, along with handwritten notes.

Police broke into his flat after a friend became concerned for Mr Odell's welfare when he been unable to contact him for more than two weeks.

A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Odell had significant levels of morphine/heroin in his system along with Codine, Diazepam and Benzoylecganine. He also had alcohol in his blood.

The inquest heard Mr Odell's body was in an advanced state of decomposition and it is believed his body had been undiscovered for between seven and 14 days.

His cause of death was given as acute morphine toxicity.

The inquest heard how Mr Odell told his GP he had taken heroin and crack cocaine just weeks before his death.

GP Dr Snelling said he had seen Mr Odell, who said he was suffering with anxiety and was having trouble sleeping, on September 11.

Dr Snelling told the inquest: "His main concern was his anxiety and problems sleeping.

"He told me that he had taken too much heroin accidentally the week before.

"I was satisfied when he said it was not an attempt at an overdose and he was already in contact with drug services."

The inquest heard how Mr Odell had suffered with low mood and anxiety and addiction issues over the years and at the time of his death was being supported for his substance misuse.

His sister Anna told the inquest: "David was a keen cyclist and worked on and off for drug support services over the past 15 years.

"He suffered from anxiety and had a history of drug abuse following relationship breakdowns.

"These breakdowns could be a trigger for his drug-taking."

The inquest heard how Mr Odell attempted suicide in 2013 and in 2013/14 had been in the recovery treatment centre Chandos House in the city.

Mr Odell started working at Chandos House following his recovery, as a service practitioner helping others overcome their addiction.

He left Chandos House in August last year and took up a new job with a Developing Health Initiative.

At the same time, the inquest heard, Mr Odell's relationship with his partner broke down.

The inquest heard Mr Odell had left handwritten notes on the cooker to his flat to his ex-partner and mother of his 14-year-old daughter, and his recent girlfriend.

The inquest heard the letters described how Mr Odell was struggling to cope with emotions and he 'would never be alright.'
