MIAMI _ Stephen Myers followed his 21-year-old lover home early Friday morning to find out where she had been all night. He confronted her, then shot and killed her in the driveway, according to police.
Detectives soon learned that Myers' lover, Winnie Mendoza, was his niece through marriage, the agency said Friday afternoon.
"It is really unfortunate that this individual resorted to violence and took this young lady's life in order to solve personal issues," said Alvaro Zabaleta, a spokesman for Miami-Dade police.
Myers, 44, was arrested and charged with second degree murder. He was being held Friday with no bond in Miami-Dade's Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Police say Mendoza and Myers had a "secret sexual relationship" for two years.
On Friday morning, police say Myers saw Mendoza heading to her home on Southwest 307th Street and followed her.
"The defendant demanded to know who the victim had been with all night and an argument ensued, a detective wrote in an arrest report. "At some point during the argument, the defendant shot the victim multiple times."
Myers then left and headed home, where he told his wife he had shot her niece, police said.
He then fled, but was soon found by police. According to the arrest report, he confessed to the shooting.
