Man who had heart attack on golf course 'cheated death' thanks to friends

A man who survived a heart attack while out playing golf 'cheated death' thanks to the quick-thinking of friends and strangers.

Steve Ross, 61, was airlifted to hospital after he collapsed at Cleethorpes Golf Club on Thursday evening.

He was about to take a shot when he suffered a "massive heart attack", reports GrimsbyLive.

Senior manager Steve, from Scartho, Lincolnshire, is now recovering well in hospital.

But, without crucial intervention in the first few minutes, he may not have survived.

His playing partners immediately administered CPR as soon as he collapsed, while another group of golfers rushed to grab a defibrillator.

Steve's partner, Louise Selby, said: “He happened to be in the perfect place and with the perfect set of people for him to make it - the circumstances are miraculous.

“Steve was on the green with his friends Judith and Paul Gorman, and Stuart Aitken. One moment he was about to take a shot, and the next he had a massive heart attack.

“They immediately rang 999 and began giving him CPR.

"A group of three other young men came over - one took over CPR when Paul got tired, and another ran to the clubhouse for the defibrillator.

"Together, they were able to give him the shock. He says the first thing he remembers when he opened his eyes was Stuart saying ‘come on mate’."

An ambulance arrived at the golf club within minutes, and Steve was flown to Lincoln County Hospital where he underwent surgery to have two stents fitted.

A doctor who saw him the next morning remarked: “So, you are the man who cheated death.”

Louise says she will be forever grateful to everyone who helped him.

She would like to thank Mark Genney, Steve Court and Dan Green, who were playing nearby, and Gill Kapka and Nigel Leach, who administered the defibrillator.

“Saying 'thank you' just doesn’t seem enough for what they have done. I am so grateful to all of them,” she said.

“If he had been working at home on his own when it happened, it would have been a very different story.

"He has made a miraculous recovery.

“We met through online dating in 2019, and decided to spend lockdown together. He’s such a wonderful guy, I don’t know what I would have done if he had been taken away from me.

“We have both been very lucky.

"I would like to say thank you to everyone involved, including the golf club, the air ambulance, the coronary care team at the hospital and the surgeon who fitted the stent."

Steve is hoping to return home on Monday.

The Cleethorpes Golf Club have also wished Steve a speedy recovery, and a link to donate to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance is available on their Facebook page.

The importance of rapid access to defibrillators has made international news in recent weeks after Danish footballer Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch in Copenhagen during a Euro 2020 football match and was quickly resuscitated.
