Man who got behind the wheel after drinking a bottle of brandy calls it 'a moment of madness'

A drink driver drank a bottle of brandy and drove from his ex-partner's home when he came to the attention of police.

Officers were looking for the car being driven by Sam Chesney in connection with an unrelated matter, Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard.

It was on February 2 this year, shortly after 3am, that they saw the car in Birrell Road, Hyson Green, and stopped it.

They identified Chesney, 31, of Birrell Road, who was driving, and he was asked if he had been drinking.

He confirmed he had and a gave a breath specimen. The reading was 61 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, over the limit of 35.

In police interview he said he had consumed a bottle of brandy and driven from his ex-partner's house.

At court, he pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

He told magistrates: "It was a stupid thing to do. It was just a moment of madness, really. I went downhill over the last few years. When I get stressed, I turn to alcohol. It was a stupid mistake".

Chesney was banned from driving for 17 months, fined £120, ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £34.

He was offered the drink drive rehabilitation course, which will reduce his disqualification by 128 days.
