Man who gave birth opens up about public reaction to baby bump

A man opened up about his experience giving birth and the public reaction to his baby bump.

Transgender film-maker Jason Barker's documentary, A Deal With the Universe, premiered last month and tells the story of his pregnancy with partner Tracey.

Jason was born female but transitioned about 20 years ago when he was 26, just after meeting Tracey.

The pair had hoped to start a family with Tracey trying to conceive with her own eggs. Sadly that didn't work and resorted to their next plan, which was using Jason's eggs to impregnate Tracey.

The couple now have a son, who is eight this year, and he spoke about his experience on Good Morning Britain today.

Asked by host Charlotte Hawkins about the reaction to his baby bump in public, Jason said that people often "didn't know".

"I wore a long cardigan and I think people just thought I was a fat bloke for pretty much until 28 weeks!

"It took a long while until I was offered a seat on a bus - I was massive and I couldn't hide it. It was like, 'Thank you, at last!'."

Jason also said that in the film, he and Tracey made an effort not to take everything too seriously.

"Tracey and I both make light of things that otherwise would be very serious," he said. "That's what we do as a couple."
