Man who fell in between trams has 'leg amputated' and is in critical condition

A man has had his leg amputated after he fell between the gap of a double tram.

The man is expected to pull through despite being in a critical condition following the collision at a Metrolink stop in Exchange Square, Manchester on September 11.

Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of a man bring hit by a tram just before 11.30pm. Officers carried out first aid before he was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

The Manchester Evening News reports an investigation is ongoing according to TfGM, who updated the Metrolink and rail subcommittee of the Greater Manchester transport committee today (Friday).

Victoria Mercer, service delivery manager at Metrolink, told members: “There was an incident on Saturday at Exchange Square.

“This was an incident involving a male walking down the platform. He had his back turned to the tram and was walking as the tram was pulling out of the stop.

“He leant into the tram as the tram was moving and he fell between the gap of a double unit.

“That incident is under investigation at the moment. The man is in critical condition and it’s been confirmed that his one leg has been amputated, but he is expected to pull through.”

Greater Manchester Police and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch are heading up the investigation.

Enquiries by GMP officers are ongoing and anyone who may have seen anything is urged to call 0161 856 4741.
