Man who fell from Tyne Bridge pulled from river by firefighters in early hours

A man who fell from the Tyne Bridge was pulled from the river by firefighters moments later.

Emergency services were called at around 12.30am on Friday after reports a man had fallen from the bridge into the River Tyne below.

Firefighters from Byker , Newcastle Central and Gateshead stations arrived and crews went out on a fire boat to search for the man.

He was pulled from the water into the boat before being taken to waiting paramedics.

The man was then taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

He remains in hospital in a stable condition.

A spokesperson for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We had three crews from Byker, Newcastle Central and Gateshead.

"The alarm was caused by a person in the water. Crews rescued a man from the river using a fire boat.

"He was assessed by paramedics and transferred by ambulance to hospital."
