Man who fell between trams in Manchester city centre has had 'leg amputated' and remains critical

A man who fell between the gap of a double tram in Manchester city centre has had ‘one leg amputated’ and remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) says the man is ‘expected to pull through’ after the collision at the Metrolink stop at Exchange Square on September 11.

Police had been called to reports of a man being hit by a tram just before 11.30pm, with officers conducting first aid before the man was taken to hospital by ambulance.

An investigation is ongoing according to TfGM, who updated the Metrolink and rail subcommittee of the Greater Manchester transport committee today (Friday).

Victoria Mercer, service delivery manager at Metrolink, told members: “There was an incident on Saturday at Exchange Square.

“This was an incident involving a male walking down the platform. He had his back turned to the tram and was walking as the tram was pulling out of the stop.

“He leant into the tram as the tram was moving and he fell between the gap of a double unit.

“That incident is under investigation at the moment. The man is in critical condition and it’s been confirmed that his one leg has been amputated, but he is expected to pull through.”

Greater Manchester Police and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch are heading up the investigation.

Enquiries by GMP officers are ongoing and anyone who may have seen anything is urged to call 0161 856 4741.
