Man who failed to get treatment for dog’s jaw injury banned from keeping animals for 10 years

A man who failed to get treatment for his dog’s jaw injury has been banned from keeping animals for 10 years.

Robert Lashley’s Patterdale terrier Bash had a “weeping, swollen and painful” wound when he was seized by police in September 2019 and put into the care of the RSPCA.

The 26-year-old, of Richardson Street, Ashington, Northumberland, has now been handed a decade-long animal ban after pleading guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to his dog.

Lashley was sentenced at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on April 23 following a prosecution brought by the RSPCA.

The RSPCA inspector who led the investigation for the animal welfare charity said: “I found Bash, a black and tan terrier with an injury to his lower right jaw - it looked sore and in need of veterinary treatment.

“Lashley claimed a friend had taken Bash to receive treatment but there were no such records nor could the veterinary staff remember a dog being brought into the surgery with such injuries.”

Police seized Bash and placed him into the RSPCA’s care so he could receive vet treatment.

His infected wound was weeping, swollen and painful. He was given pain relief and antibiotics before he underwent surgery.

Fortunately Bash’s wound healed well and he has since found a loving new home through the RSPCA’s Great Ayton animal centre.

In addition to the 10-year disqualification, Lashley was fined £550 and ordered to pay £400 costs.
