Man who died in Washington crash named as Andrew Lakey from Pelaw

The driver who died at the scene of crash in Washington has now been named.

At 9.50am on Sunday, officers received a report of a one-vehicle collision on the Havannah Roundabout at the junction of the southbound A194M slip road and the A182 Washington Highway.

It is believed a Renault Scenic was travelling southbound taking the A194M slip road when, for reasons yet to be established, it lost control and collided with street furniture.

Emergency services attended and sadly the male driver, who was the only person in the car, was found dead at the scene.

He can now be identified as Andrew Lakey, 40, of Pelaw. His family are being supported by specialist officers at this time.

Sergeant Steve Armstrong, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: “This is a devastating time for Andrew’s family and our thoughts go out to them following this awful incident.

“We are continuing to carry out a range of inquiries to build a clearer picture as to the circumstances surrounding the collision that sadly led to Andrew’s death.

“We continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward to assist our investigation – this was a busy section of road at that time of day and we’d urge anyone in the area to check their dashcam footage and come forward.

“If you saw a Renault Scenic on Sunday morning in the area where the collision occurred, we want to hear from you.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of the police website or by calling 101 quoting log 289 041020.
