A man who was diving to retrieve golf balls from a lake died on Tuesday.

The victim, in his 50s, was pulled from the water after emergency services were called to the Hilton Hotel in Templepatrick, Co Antrim, just after 2pm.

UUP councillor Paul Michael said: “A community is in shock after news of a this tragic incident. Our sincere sympathy to the family of this gentleman who has so tragically lost his life.”

Mr Michael’s party colleague Cllr Jim Montgomery said the victim was one of two men who would regularly dive for golf balls, which would be sold with the proceeds going to a good cause.

He added: “It’s horrendous to even think about it. It’s such a terrible accident.”

Pam Cameron, South Antrim DUP MLA, said: “This is tragic news coming from Templepatrick this evening.

“My thoughts are of course with the family and friends of the individual who has lost their life. I’m very thankful for the efforts of the emergency services who, as ever, have been quick to respond.”

A PSNI spokesman said: “Police and other emergency services responded. Sadly, a man’s body was later recovered from the water.

“The local council have been made aware.”

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service also attended the scene after they received a 999 call at 2.17 pm.

A spokesperson said: “NIAS dispatched an Emergency crew, HART crew and ambulance officer to the scene.
