Man who died in Formby house fire named as police search for family

Police have named a man who was found in a house after a fire in Formby.

John MacLeod was found dead after firefighters attended the blaze on Holmwood Drive at around 6.45pm on Tuesday, January 3. Five fire engines attended and crews entered the house wearing breathing apparatus to fight the fire.

Police later confirmed that the 65-year-old died at the home. Officers are now appealing to find Mr Macleod's next of kin.

A spokesperson for Merseyside police said: "Please share and help the Coroner's office find the next of kin of a Formby man who recently passed away. John MacLeod, who was 65-years-old, sadly died at his home on Holmwood Drive on Tuesday 3 January.

"There are no suspicious circumstances. Please call (0151) 934 2412 or email james.martindale@sefton.gov.uk with any information."

The cause of the fire is not believed to be suspicious and an investigation has not been launched. A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended an incident on Holmwood Drive, Formby on the evening of Tuesday 3rd January.

"Crews were alerted at 6.45pm and two fire engines were on scene at 6.52pm. A further three fire engines attended to provide additional breathing apparatus support, taking the total number of appliances to five at the height of the incident.

"North West Ambulance Service and Merseyside Police also attended. An initial two firefighters were committed to fight the fire in breathing apparatus (BA) with a hose reel jet and search the two storey detached house.

"An additional two firefighters in BA were deployed to the property with a further hose reel jet taking the total firefighters inside the property to four. The fire was extinguished soon after and ventilation of the property ensued.

"The scene was handed over to Merseyside Police and our crews left the scene at 10.27pm."
