Man who died in East Lancs Road crash named as Mark Byrne MBE

A man who died in a crash between a car and a HGV on the East Lancashire Road was an MBE.

Mark Byrne MBE, 58, died at the scene of the horror smash in Leigh at 10.20am on Tuesday morning.

Florin Solomon, 28, of Lansdowne Walk, Worcester has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Bolton Crown Court on Wednesday 19 February 2020.

The collision happened when a HGV, driven by Mr Solomon, crashed with a Toyota Corolla that was turning right on to the A580.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Atherleigh Way.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, Mr Byrne was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 56-year-old woman, who was travelling in the Toyota with Mr Byrne, suffered serious injuries.

She remains in hospital for treatment.

The road was closed for most of Tuesday while investigations were carried out, and has since reopened.
