Man who died after 'medical episode' in park named as arrested woman released under investigation

A man who died after suffering a medical episode at a park in Stockport has been named.

Michael Stansfield, aged in his 50s, fell ill in Brabyns Park, Marple Bridge, on March 23.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but sadly died, police said.

GMP said his death was being treated as suspicious.

A woman, aged 31, was arrested on suspicion of section 47 assault in connection with the incident.

She has since been released under investigation, a spokesperson for GMP confirmed.

A file in relation to Mr Stansfield's death has been passed to Stockport Coroners' Court, a spokesperson said.

An inquest into his death will open at a later date.

After Mr Stansfield's death, a statement posted on the GMP Marple and Hazel Grove Facebook page said: "To dispel rumours that appear to have been circulating in Marple, we can confirm there was an incident at Brabyns Park during the afternoon of Tuesday 23rd March.

"A man tragically died in public after a medical episode.

"The death is being treated as suspicious and a 'Crime Scene' was in place on Wednesday but it is now stood down.

"There is no risk to the wider public."
