Speaking on Tuesday afternoon, a GMP spokesman gave an updated statement, saying he 'was arrested on suspicion of assault.'

An investigation was launched by the Independent Office for Police Conduct on Sunday following news of Mr Coleman's death.

In a statement on the IOPC's website, a spokesman said the independent investigation was 'declared' at 7.30am on Sunday.

Investigators were sent to the custody suite 'to begin gathering information' and 'to meet with the man's family'.

The statement said: "The man’s next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course."

Paying tribute, Steve Owen said: "God bless Joey until we walk together again R.I.P."

“Local officers swiftly responded to the incident and arrested a man.

“On arrival at Cheadle Police Station, the man became unwell and he was taken to hospital but he was sadly pronounced dead. Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this devastating time.

“We have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct who are independently investigating and we will continue to co-operate with them fully.”
