A man who died after being pulled from a river in Dumfries has been named by police.

James Carruthers was rescued from the River Nith on Friday.

Emergency services raced to the scene after he was spotted in the river near College Street just after 7pm.

Nith Inshore Rescue, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service were able to pull the 48-year-old from the water.

James was ruched to Dumfries and Galloway Royal infirmary.

He sadly died a short time after arriving at the hospital.

Police are appealing for witnesses but said his death is not being treated suspicious.
