A man who claimed to have an 'explosive device' at a house in Tameside remains in police custody.

Police were called to a property on Birch Lane, in Dukinfield, to reports of concern for the welfare of a man claiming to possess an explosive device at around 12.45pm on Thursday (January 16).

Bomb disposal experts were called to assess a suspicious package, which was later declared as 'non-viable'.

Local residents also saw armed officers in the area.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of malicious communications.

GMP have confirmed that the man remains in police custody today for questioning.

There is no update on what the device was at this time, police say.

A large police cordon was in place in the area for around four hours and neighbours were told to 'stay indoors', 'keep away from windows' and 'lock their doors'.

One trader described the police activity on Birch Lane.

They said: “We have been told to lock the door and we are not allowed to go out.

“I think they are searching the area. They have stopped cars coming down the road.

“Police have been to us and told us to lock the door and move away from the window.”

A Greater Manchester Police statement said: "At around 12.45pm today (Thursday 16 January 2020), officers were called to reports of concern for the welfare of man claiming to possess an explosive device at a property on Birch Lane, Dukinfield.

"Bomb disposal officers attended the scene and have now declared the device non-viable.

"A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of malicious communications. He remains in police custody for questioning. A cordon was in place but it has now been lifted."
