Man who claimed he had COVID-19 spat in PC's mouth

A man who spat in a police officer's mouth after saying he had COVID-19 has been jailed.

Scott Brain admitted assaulting PC Matthew Lazurek in an incident in St Georges Road, Bristol, on May 5.

The 32-year-old, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker.

He also admitted breaching bail conditions by failing to reside at the Grain House, Bristol, as directed.

Bristol magistrates jailed him for 26 weeks.

Brain was sought over an alleged breach of court bail conditions and was caught by officers on May 5 at about 3.30pm.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "Brain tried to hamper arrest effort and suggested he had COVID-19 before spitting at the PC.

"The officer was uninjured and remained on duty."
