Man who broke hips at Funderworld speaks out for first time since incident

A man who suffered "life-changing" injuries at Funderworld has spoken out about breaking his hips at the fair.

Luke Smith, of Bedminster Down, slipped on a wet metal ramp while getting off a spinning ride at the Durdham Down amusement park on April 24, Bristol Live reported last month.

The 26-year-old is considering legal action against Funderworld, which he claims did not put safety mats next to the ride.

Luke says his legs went through metal railings at the bottom of the ramp, breaking both his hips.

He dislocated his collarbone and shoulder, broke three bones in his back and sustained several gashes on his legs.

Luke, who is set to be in a wheelchair until September, told Bristol Live: “It’s very painful.

“What happened is a bit of a blur. I can remember falling. I had the bars on my legs and I felt shocked.

“My legs were stuck. It felt like an electric shock. I remember asking the fair workers to turn off the ride.

“They were not very friendly. They said, ‘You haven’t broken anything.’”

Luke, who volunteers at Bristol Zoo, came home from Southmead Hospital yesterday (May 13).

Doctors have told Luke his injuries are "life-changing" and could leave him with permanent hip trouble. It is not yet known if he will regain full mobility.

He is using a transfer board and wheelchair to move around, but is unable to move his right arm for several weeks, while his injuries heal.

“It has been really difficult,” he said.

“I have been trying to cope with it. It was a long time to be in hospital.

“It was quite scary to go through the operations to rebuild my hips.”

Luke added that he has found his injuries particularly difficult to accept because he is very active and enjoys activities like mountain biking.

His mum Tanya said: “It has ruined our lives this year.

“We were both going on holiday to Tenerife in June, but we have had to cancel it.

“I’m recovering from cancer and Luke had been helping care for me before his injury.

“It’s really difficult but we are getting there. Luke is very strong-minded and determined.”

A spokeswoman for Funderworld said it does not want to comment on the potential legal action.

She added: “We wish Mr Smith a speedy and full recovery from his accident.”

Last month the spokeswoman gave Funderworld’s account of the incident.

She said: “On exiting the stationary ride Mr Smith slipped. The first aid team were called by the ride attendant.

“They attended the scene immediately. On assessing Mr Smith they ascertained that he would require further treatment and phoned for an ambulance.

“The team remained in attendance with Mr Smith until the ambulance arrived. They then provided the ambulance team with the history of the situation.

“The ambulance personnel then took over and transported Mr Smith to hospital. To express our concern we have made a follow up call to his family to check on his progress.”
