BRIEF: Aurora man who broke legs in Starved Rock fall could face charges

March 23--An Aurora man who broke both legs in a fall from a canyon ledge in Starved Rock State Park could face charges, authorities said.

Christopher Stewart, 18, of Aurora, climbed over a wooden railing, stepped off a walkway and jumped onto a rim along Wildcat Canyon on Friday, according to Illinois Conservation Police Sgt. Robert Frazier.

Frazier said Stewart walked to the top of a waterfall and fell while trying to break ice at the top of the fall.

Utica Fire Protection District firefighters found Stewart about 5:15 p.m. Friday, police said.

Authorities took Stewart, who was conscious, to the bank of the Illinois River. He was airlifted to a hospital in Peoria.

Frazier said Stewart was with two men who were "highly intoxicated." A 19-year-old Aurora woman with the group was charged with marijuana possession.
