Man who breached lockdown had 'good excuse' as he wanted to 'smash a guy's face in'

A man caught breaching France's lockdown rules wrote a note explaining he had a 'good excuse' and it was to 'smash a guy's face in.'

The 39-year-old man was discovered hiding behind a car and appeared drunk, police in Brittany said.

In France's latest lockdown residents need a certificate to leave their home.

According to CNN, local police checked the man's explanation for being outside and found he had written in the permission form: "I've gone to smash a guy's face in. That's my excuse and it's a good one."

A police spokesman said officers explained to the man that this was not a legitimate reason.

The man was reportedly found to be carrying a flick knife during the incident on Monday, but reportedly told the police he had no intention to hurt the 'guy' mentioned in his note with it.

He was detained overnight, police said.

During the latest French lockdown imposed in October, people are permitted to leave their homes for one hour of exercise just once a day and must not stray more than 1km from their homes.

Police chief Daniel Kerdraon told CNN: "Somehow he wanted to respect the law, because, when he was questioned at the police station, he insisted on the fact that he was less than a kilometre from his home."

The man was reportedly fined €135 (£120) for breaching lockdown rules and another €150 (£130) for being drunk in a public space.

President Emmanuel Macron is set to address France tonight to lay out his plans for exiting the lockdown.

He said he will provide clarity on his plans to stop the “uncertainty and misery without end” in an televised address to the nation on Tuesday.

The leader is not expected to lift the lockdown that has closed shops, schools, bars and restaurants immediately - but to outline plans for exiting the restrictions.
