Man who attacked police officer at huge rave avoids jail

A man has avoided jail after attacking a police officer at an illegal Yate rave.

Around 700 people attended a party lasting almost 24 hours last Halloween (October 31) at a disused warehouse in Beeches Industrial Estate.

One of them was Jerin Nixon, 23, who admitted three offences yesterday (February 4) at Bristol Magistrates' Court.

Nixon, of Horse Fair Lane, in Newent, assaulted PC Christopher Wright, damaged a telephone exchange box and failed to leave the estate when police ordered him to.

He was handed 150 hours of unpaid work and £500 fine. He must pay £150 to South Gloucestershire in compensation for the exchange box and £50 to the officer.

Nixon must also pay £85 in prosecution costs, meaning his bill totals £785. He was told to pay at a rate of £73.50 a month.

Five other people accused of involvement in the rave are due to appear in the same court on Tuesday (February 9).

Police say they prevented an estimated 200 to 300 people reaching the site, before officers managed to break up the gathering.

"Two people received £10,000 fines in the days after for their part in organising the event, in breach of Covid-19 regulations at the time," said a force spokesperson.

"A further 13 people have now been retrospectively fined £200 for attending a large gathering, as per the restrictions at the time.

"Enquiries are continuing and we would still ask people to contact us if they recognise the people pictured in our appeal for information issued here."
