Man who assaulted Yellowstone tourists sentenced to prison

A man who assaulted two Yellowstone National Park tourists in a women’s restroom last July has been sentenced to more than six years in prison.

The National Park Service stated in a news release issued Thursday that Jackson B. Coombs, 30, was sentenced recently in federal court to 6.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon and one count of simple assault.

Coombs was arrested by U.S. Park Rangers after the incident, which began in the stall of a women’s bathroom. Coombs was said to have banged on the stall door and punched the woman in the face and head.

Her male companion was assaulted while trying to help. Coombs used bear spray on both victims and was ultimately subdued by a passerby, before rangers arrived.

The woman suffered a concussion and multiple cuts and bruises to her face.

Coombs, whose hometown was not divulged, will be placed on supervised release for three years after serving his prison sentence.
