Man who assaulted taxi driver in viral video 'will hand himself in to gardai'

A man who assaulted a taxi driver in a viral video is set to hand himself in to gardai, it has been reported.

The video shows the man racially abusing and then attacking the taxi driver, and has been widely shared on social media.

Gardai said they are currently investigating the alleged assault that occurred in Donnycarney at around 10pm on April 21, 2019.

However it has now emerged that the man at the centre of the video is to hand himself in.

Taxi driver injured and robbed by two passengers in early-morning assault in Co Dublin

Derek Devoy, founder of suicide prevention service Taxi Watch, said he had been in contact with the passenger, and believes he will hand himself in to a garda station this evening.

He told Independent.ie: “I don’t want anything that will jeopardise his court case. I just want to get him to the Garda station and after that I’m finished.

“I spoke to him for an hour this morning. He’s 100% remorseful but I don’t think that’s going to help him.”
