A man who attacked people in the street before running towards an east London conference centre has died after being restrained by security staff and police.

Scotland Yard said witnesses saw the 37-year-old launch a series of assaults on people in Docklands at 7.15am on Wednesday.

He was also seen throwing himself on to passing cars and confronting council workers.

He ran towards the ExCeL centre where he was restrained by security staff, one of whom was bitten.

Police officers handcuffed him but he became unresponsive.

He was rushed to hospital by paramedics but later died, police said.

Watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an investigation into the incident.

A spokesman said: "We have sent investigators to the scene and to post-incident procedures and have begun to gather evidence."

A statement from the Met Police said: "Officers were called at 7.15am on Wednesday July 31 to Cundy Road, N16, to reports of a man in the middle of the road assaulting people.

"It was then reported that the same man was walking off, towards Prince Regents Lane. Further reports were received that the man was acting irrationally, throwing himself onto passing cars and confronting council workers.

"The man was then reported to be running towards the ExCeL Centre. Officers attended and found the man being restrained by security staff at the centre.

"The man was placed in handcuffs by officers, but became unresponsive."

Two forensic scenes are in place, at Prince Regents Lane and the ExCeL Centre, and police are working to tell the man's family.

Scotland Yard's internal Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.
