Man who assaulted mum and hurled racist abuse at police jailed

A black man racially abused black police officers, a court heard.

Mark Smith was arrested after being abusive to his mother, Bristol Crown Court was told.

When he was arrested he subjected officers to a tirade of abuse, using the n-word as well as branding one a "dirty, stinking, monkey".

Smith, 54, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to assault, using racially aggravated threatening words or behaviour and common assault in May.

At the time he was the subject of a community order after being convicted of a string of racially aggravated offences in which he verbally abused people in Cabot Circus.

Bristol Crown Court heard he had 72 convictions for 202 offences.

Judge Michael Longman jailed him for 14 months.

He told Smith: "A police officer received the brunt of your foul behaviour and dreadful language."

Alex Daymond, prosecuting, told the court Smith was abusive to his mother Valerie and threw an electronic tag box and instruction book towards her.

He said Smith was arrested and racially abused police.

One officer made a statement saying: "It is the first time I have been subjected to abuse from a person of shared ethnicity.

"It tested me as his hateful words were disgusting.

"I wanted to retaliate but I had to hold myself back in check."

Gregory Gordon, defending, said: "He threw the items (at his mother) not with intent to hurt.

"He is sorry to his mother for what he has done.

"He is sorry the book hit her.

"He is sorry for the obvious fear it must have caused her."

Mr Gordon described his client's racist rant at the police officer as "obviously inexcusable" and said Smith was sorry about that too.
