Man who assassinated Robert Kennedy 'stabbed in prison'

The man who shot dead American politician Robert Kennedy has reportedly been 'stabbed' in

Robert Kennedy was shot dead  on June 5  1968 shortly after he had won a Democrat presidential primary contest in the state of California.

 Robert, younger brother of John Kennedy, was shot as he made his through the kitchen area of The Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.

Sirhan Sirhan was found guilty of the murder after a trial the following year. 

There are now reports that Sirhan has been stabbed by another inmate at a prison in San Diego.

The state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation  confirmed in inmate had been at attacked at a prison in the San Diego area.

A spokesman said: "Officers responded quickly, and found an inmate with stab wound injuries. He was transported to an outside hospital for medical care, and is currently in stable condition."

US media outlets have reported that Sirhan , now 75, was attacked on Friday afternoon at the Richard J Donovan centre in California.

Robert Kennedy, who appealed to the young and voters across the racial divide, was tipped to be set on a path toward becoming President.

 His death, just five years after the high profile assassination of his brother John, shocked the world.

At his trial Sirhan said he could not remember what happened.

Robert Kennedy's murder has been subject to intense speculation of the years, with claims that Sirhan had been brainwashed to kill  Kennedy on behalf of his enemies.

Sirhan was found guilty at his trial in 1969 and sentenced to death, commuted into a life sentence when California abandoned the death penalty.
