A man who threatened police with a self-fashioned blade has been jailed.
Dean Strickland said he was suffering mental health difficulties and wanted to be sectioned.
Initially police tried to calm him down and left the scene.
But then paramedics checked him over Strickland became re-agitated, threatened medics and police returned and arrested him with a Taser gun.
The 39-year-old, of Cairo Court in Manilla Crescent, Weston-super-Mare, pleaded guilty to affray after the incident outside his home on February 4.
Judge Mark Horton jailed him for five months.
He told Strickland: "There is no need of mental health treatment.
"Your impairment was caused by abuse of alcohol and drugs.
"That could not be clearer to this court."
Julian Howells, prosecuting, told Bristol Crown Court Strickland was seen to be holding a blade on the fire escape at the rear of his address.
When police called at the scene a second time Strickland told them: "I'm going to slice you up.
"I'll f-ing throw it.
"Why didn't you take me the first time?
"Come on, I'll take you on."
After being Tasered and arrested an apologetic Strickland said he had wanted to be sectioned under the Mental Health Act and had not intended to harm anyone.
He admitted downing six cans of beer, vodka and a 100mg Quetiapine tablet.
Alex Daymond, defending, said his client had been a drinker since the age of 14 and had contended with both bereavement and illness in his family.
Mr Daymond said: "He has expressed remorse and he is deeply ashamed of what he did that night."
The court heard Strickland had previous convictions for assaulting police, his problems were attributed to abuse of alcohol and drugs and he was not deemed suitable for mental health treatment.
