Man who almost bought Rangers tests positive for Covid-19

A wealthy American businessman who came close to buying Rangers has tested positive for COVID-19.

Donald Trump, whose golf courses have been endorsed by the likes of Scotland international Scott McKenna, confirmed his positive test just hours after Rangers progressed to the group stage of the Europa League following a 2-1 win over Galatasaray at Ibrox.

He revealed the news on his popular Twitter feed, which is followed by numerous Scottish football figures including former Motherwell and Partick Thistle defender Stephen Craigan.

Trump's mother Mary Anne MacLeod was born in the village of Tong on the Isle of Lewis, 284 miles from Ibrox Stadium.

In 2010, he revealed it was a "possibility" that he could invest in a Scottish club and added: "Stranger things have happened."

Two years later, Trump reportedly considered buying Rangers before being put off by concerns about the state of their finances.

A source told Press and Journal : "We looked seriously and walked away.

"It just did not make sense to us, although they are a great club."

The American would have become one of the most high-profile owners in Scottish football, having made appearances on such TV shows as The Apprentice and Reporting Scotland.

Trump put the disappointment of his failure to buy Rangers behind him and went on to begin a successful career in politics.

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos, meanwhile, remains a target for French side Lille with the transfer window closing this week.
