Man who allegedly fled scene of double fatality charged with manslaughter

A 50-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter after a fatal crash in Perth's southern suburbs on Friday night which claimed the lives of two young women.

Police said Shane Bradley Pearce was driving a Toyota Landcruiser on Ennis Avenue when it crashed into a Nissan Micra being driven by 27-year-old Lauren Jane Prothero at the intersection of Elanora Drive in Cooloongup.

Ms Prothero had been driving with her friend, Paige May Ward from Cooloongup, also aged 27.

Mr Pearce and his male passenger both allegedly left the scene, and the driver was arrested shortly after.

Ms Ward died at the scene, while Ms Prothero was rushed to Rockingham Hospital, but later died from her injuries.

Mr Pearce, from the suburb of Hillman, has been charged with two counts of manslaughter, driving without a licence, failing to render assistance and failing to report an incident causing death.

His bail was refused and he appeared in the Northbridge Magistrates Court today, where he did not apply for bail.

Dressed in a red and black checked shirt,  Mr Pearce acknowledged he understood each of the five charges as they were read out to him.

He was remanded in custody to appear via video link in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on June 21.

WA Police are continuing their investigation into the crash and would like to speak to any witnesses.

The crash was one of several serious road accidents in the lead-up to the WA Day long weekend, including the death of a motorcyclist in Quinns Rocks.
