Man accused of hitting landlady over the head with a kettle when she asked him to move out

A man who was told to give up his room is accused of trashing his landlady's kitchen and bashing her over the head with a kettle.

Beresford Lee, a care home manager, was living at a property in Victoria Park, Fishponds, when his landlady told him to give up his room, the court heard.

He was lodging with Nicol Burgin but when she told him he needed the room back at the end of the month, Bristol Crown Court heard he "lost the plot".

He is accused of trashing his landlady's kitchen and hitting her over the head with a kettle.

The jury was told that, after throwing a glass at her and hurling crockery, he struck her with the kettle, causing a bad cut to her head.

Lee, 53 and of Guildford Road in St Annes, denies assault occasioning actual harm on November 24 last year.

Alex Daymond, prosecuting, said when Lee turned up at Ms Burgin's house, saying he was homeless, they made an informal arrangement for him to rent a room over November 2018 for £300.

But the court heard there came a time when Ms Burgin needed the room for family and told Lee he would have to leave at the end of the month.

Mr Daymond said Lee started to move out his belongings, and then asked for a £100 refund as he was leaving early.

After Ms Burgin refused to give him money he picked up a glass and threw it into her chest, the court heard.

'He's smashed stuff in my kitchen and just whacked a kettle over my head.'

Mr Daymond said: "She says he threw a coffee cup and then crockery.

"She pushed the defendant away and said 'f-off, just get out'.

"She said the defendant picked up a kettle, raised it in the air and brought it down with some force on top of her head."

Ms Burgin told a 999 operator: "Basically a man, somebody renting a room off me, has come in now, he's smashed stuff in my kitchen and just whacked a kettle over my head."

The prosecutor said: "The Crown says it was an attack by the defendant because he was angry he had to leave, wasn't getting his money back and he just lost the plot."

Lee told police Ms Burgin attacked him.

Speaking from behind a screen, Ms Burgin told the jury: "He picked up the glass and threw it at me.

"It hit my chest and smashed on the floor.

"He threw the cup, which again smashed.

"I was stood in front of the washing machine.

"He grabbed the frying pan, plates and glasses and wouldn't stop throwing them.

"I was just surrounded by shattered glass and crockery

"I'm thinking 'I need to get this man out of my house, what is he doing?'."

She denied throwing things at Lee and was adamant he hit her with her kettle.

The case continues.
