Man went to pub with axe after being thrown out following 'row over a table' - the day boozers reopened

A man went to a pub with an axe after being thrown out following a row over a table - the day boozers reopened across Greater Manchester.

Officers were called to the Garricks Head pub in Urmston, Trafford, following the incident at about 4pm yesterday (Saturday).

The pub's landlady said the man did not make it into the pub, on Moorside Road, with the weapon.

It came on the day pubs were allowed to open for the first time since March after lockdown restrictions were eased.

Landlady Dawn Slater said she decided to close the pub for two hours to allow the situation to calm down.

It re-opened later that night.

Officers said they were called after fighting broke out in the pub.

'I took the decision to close for two hours, to calm the situation', the landlady said (Sean Hansford)

There appeared to be 'a dispute over a table', they said.

The men were ejected. Shortly after, one returned to the area with an axe, according to police.

He was apprehended on Brook Road.

This afternoon, officers in Trafford said four men had been arrested on suspicion of affray.

One of the men was also held on suspicion of possessing class A drugs, and another was further arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

A further two men were ejected from the pub after verbally abusing police.

In a post on the GMP Trafford North Facebook page, officers said: "Yesterday at around 4pm, numerous officers attended at the Garrick’s Head Pub, Urmston due to the reports of males fighting inside.

"4 males had started fighting over what appears to be a dispute over a table. One male left the pub and returned in possession of an axe.

"On police arrival a total of 4 males were arrested on suspicion of affray, 1 male was further arrested for possession of Class A Drugs & another for drink driving.

"2 Males who were unconnected with the incident were also ejected from the premises as they felt the need to verbally abuse the attending police officers.

"All this at only 4pm in the afternoon – the premises was required to close for a period of 2 hours.

"Please try and drink responsibility or stay at home."

Ms Slater said the men found fighting have received a lifetime ban from the premises.

"I took the decision to close for two hours, to calm the situation," she said.

"We only did seating, not standing, and it was quite full. We didn't have any other trouble."

On Sunday morning, police said there were 'no incidents of note' across Greater Manchester after pubs and bars reopened on Saturday.
