Man was left with fractured skull and bleed on brain after 'vicious and prolonged' attack

A Newark man suffered a fractured skull and eye socket and bleeds on the brain following a brutal assault.

The victim fell to the floor and smashed his head on the road after being punched in the face by the attacker.

Stephen Chilvers, 39, then continued to punch and kick him in the head before fleeing the scene. The victim also suffered a broken jaw in the fight.

Police officers were called to the incident in Chatham Court, Newark, shortly before 11pm on May 2, 2019.

Officers attended an address in Stoke Avenue, Newark, the following morning to arrest Chilvers who became aggressive towards officers before he was detained.

Inspector Charlotte Allardice, District Commander for Newark and Sherwood, said: “This was a vicious and prolonged attack which left the victim with serious head injuries.

“Chilvers continued to attack him while he was lying prone on the floor, landing more punches, and kicking him in the head.

Nottinghamshire Police takes such reports extremely seriously and will always investigate and look to take robust action against those found to have committed such offences.

“This kind of violent behaviour is totally unacceptable.”

Chilvers, of Pierson Street, Newark, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, August 3, after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The perpetrator was jailed for two years.
