Man wanted over Sydney hammer assault

A manhunt is underway following an alleged assault with a hammer at Sydney's luxury Primus Hotel. (AAP)

A man is wanted by police for the alleged attempted murder of a woman who was reportedly assaulted with a hammer at a luxury Sydney hotel.

The 41-year-old man is believed to be carrying a firearm and is in the Blue Mountains region, detectives said late on Wednesday following the overnight attack.

The woman was "seriously assaulted" in a Pitt Street hotel, police said. Numerous reports said the woman was found in a room of the Primus Hotel by staff after being attacked with a hammer.

She was taken to hospital as police established a crime scene.

The man being sought by police is Caucasian, about 180cm tall, with a solid build, and light brown hair.

Police have warned members of the public not to approach the man, but to call triple zero immediately.
