Man wanted for duping Assam students held after 8-year hunt

GUWAHATI: Vimal Kumar Choudhury from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh played catch-me-if-you-can with police for eight years till his luck ran out on Tuesday night. Choudhury was wanted on charges of duping several medical aspirants of Assam.

Choudhury vanished into thin air after 2104 when Assam CID started looking for him again until he was caught at Siliguri on Tuesday. Little did police know then that Choudhury had spent some time in Tihar jail in 2017 for a similar crime he had committed in Delhi.

Choudhury had published fake advertisements in newspapers for admission into medical and dental colleges and collected a huge amount of money from several aspirants.

Following this, a number of victims had lodged a complaint with the CID in 2014 against Choudhury. “Though the CID was searching for the accused, he could not be arrested as he was on the run and avoiding arrest,” said superintendent of police, CID, Pranabjyoti Goswami.

Later, the students moved Gauhati High Court in 2019.
